The Starting Point

Why Start Your Desert Trek in M'Hamid?

Gateway to the untouched Sahara. M'Hamid El Ghizlane is the last village before the open desert — the natural starting point for authentic Erg Chegaga and Erg Lahmar expeditions.

Far from the tourist circuits. Unlike Merzouga, M'Hamid offers a genuinely wild, uncrowded desert experience that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Ancient caravan heritage. This region was historically a major trans-Saharan trade crossroads — walking its routes is an act of living history.

Diverse desert landscapes. Rocky hamadas, shifting sand seas, dry riverbeds, and ancient fossils — the terrain changes dramatically with every day of trekking.

A Day in the Sahara

What to Expect During a Sahara Desert Trek

🌅 Dawn · 5 : 30 am

Before the Heat Rises

Wake to the deep silence of the Sahara. Tea brewed over embers, a light breakfast, and the cool morning air. Your guide reads the landscape — dunes shift overnight and routes adapt. The most beautiful light of the day belongs to those who rise early.

☀️ Midday · Rest

Desert Rest & Shade

As temperatures peak, the caravan pauses. Rest under a tent or the shadow of a dune. This is the desert's gift of stillness — time for reflection, reading, journaling, or simply watching the light change on the sand. The Sahara teaches patience.

🌌 Evening · Magic Hour

Camp, Fire & Stars

When the sun lowers, the desert turns gold, then amber, then violet. Trekking resumes in the cooler hours. Camp is set as darkness falls, fires are lit, and dinner is prepared over coals. The Milky Way above the Sahara is something no photograph can prepare you for.

🧭

Navigation

Your guide navigates by dune shape, wind direction, and generations of desert knowledge — supplemented by GPS for safety.

🎒

What You Carry

On camel-supported treks, your main pack rides with the caravan. Day pack only: water, camera, sunscreen, layers.

💧

Hydration & Safety

All water is carried by the support team. Your guides are trained in desert first aid and emergency protocols.

📱

Connectivity

Deep Sahara treks are largely off-grid. Many guests describe this disconnection as the most valuable part of the experience.
