Planning Your Trip
Everything you need to know before booking your journey into the Sahara Desert from M'Hamid El Ghizlane.
Yes. The Sahara Desert in M'Hamid El Ghizlane is safe when guided by experienced local hosts. Taragalte Nomad Camp is led by Said Naji — born and raised in M'Hamid into a Bedouin nomadic family — and his team of desert guides who know every dune, route, and weather pattern intimately.
We prioritize safety, clear communication, and your comfort throughout every step of the journey.
Learn about our Desert Camp →The best time to visit is October to April, when temperatures are comfortable for trekking and overnight camp stays. Spring and autumn are ideal for camel trekking and multi-day desert journeys.
Summer visits (May–September) are possible but best suited for shorter stays — midday heat can be intense. Desert nights remain beautiful and cool year-round.
The Taragalte Music Festival takes place every autumn in M'Hamid — a wonderful time to combine culture, music, and desert adventure.
M'Hamid El Ghizlane is in the Zagora Province, southern Morocco — about 8 hours by road from Marrakech (via Ouarzazate and Zagora) and around 5 hours from Ouarzazate.
We can assist with transport organization. Just mention it when you contact us.

Our camp sits 7km from M'Hamid — eight adobe haimas designed for comfort, authenticity, and silence.
Taragalte Nomad Camp has eight adobe haimas — traditional tents built from sun-dried mud and straw bricks (from the Arabic "al-tub"). Adobe is a natural bioclimatic material: it absorbs heat during the day and slowly releases it on cold desert nights, keeping you comfortable without mechanical cooling.
Each haima has four beds (configurable as single, double, or triple occupancy) and a private bathroom with hot and cold water.

Mobile signal is limited depending on your location in the dunes. Electricity is available at the camp in a sustainable way.
The experience is intentionally designed to encourage digital disconnection. M'Hamid is also one of the world's best places for stargazing, thanks to extremely low light pollution.
We serve authentic Berber and Moroccan cuisine prepared fresh by our team — traditional breads, couscous, tagines, and local produce. During treks, we prepare meals directly in the dunes. Our guests consistently describe the food as a highlight of the journey.
The camp also has a fully equipped kitchen and lounge dining area for shared meals.

About M'Hamid
M'Hamid El Ghizlane — "plain of the gazelles" — sits at the end of the Draa Valley where the Sahara begins.
M'Hamid El Ghizlane is the true gateway to the Sahara. While Merzouga is more commercialized and accessible, M'Hamid offers something genuinely different:
Historically, M'Hamid was a crucial caravan stop for traders heading toward Timbuktu and sub-Saharan Africa.
Discover M'Hamid in Depth →The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert — roughly nine million square kilometres — stretching across Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Egypt, and Tunisia.
Its surface shifts between vast sand dune fields (ergs), stony plateaus (hamadas), gravel plains (regs), and dry valleys (wadis). Between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago, the Sahara was a region of savannas and lush grasslands — a period known as the "Green Sahara."

Understanding who we are and the culture that gives meaning to every journey.
Said Naji was born in the heart of the Sahara Desert into a family of Bedouin origin. His parents settled in M'Hamid so their six children could attend school — but Said never lost his connection to the desert. He maintains a deep bond with the land, the dromedaries he has herded since childhood, and the nomadic code of hospitality and honor.
"If you're happy, I'm happy," he often says — and he means it. He is supported by a dedicated team of local guides, cooks, and camel handlers.
Meet Said & the Team →The Bedouin are Arab desert nomads with roots stretching back approximately 8,000 years. They are renowned for their hospitality: by tradition, a Bedouin offers shelter and food to any guest, expecting nothing in return, never asking who they are or where they are going.
They navigate by stars, sun, and the shape of wind-sculpted dunes. Their culture carries rich oral traditions of poetry, music, and storytelling — passed around the campfire across generations.

Taragalte Nomad Camp was built on Said Naji's belief that the Sahara deserves to be shared authentically — not as a spectacle, but as a living, breathing experience. Every journey we offer is grounded in the nomadic values of hospitality, respect, and deep connection to the land.
