4‑Day Sahara Desert Trek to Erg Zahar & Draa Valley from M’Hamid

After breakfast at Taragalte Nomad Camp in M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the camel caravan is loaded and the trek begins toward the Sidi Naji region.

Along the way, pass the ruins of Oulad Zbiir, where fragments of pottery reveal traces of ancient desert civilizations. After approximately three hours of hiking through wild desert terrain, lunch is served under tamarisk trees.

In the afternoon, continue trekking for another hour and a half before camping among dunes in an open area offering panoramic views of the surrounding desert.

Overnight in nomadic tents under the stars.

Today’s objective is the spectacular Erg Zahar dune region. The trek crosses vast, flat desert plains that gradually transform into dramatic sand formations.
Vegetation becomes sparse, and the sense of isolation increases as you walk through the immensity of the Sahara.
Along the way, reach a site known as “The Eye of the Hunted Gazelle,” where the ruins of a nomadic market and a fallen ksar can be explored. Ancient irrigation channels, once used for agriculture, remain visible in the sand.
In the late afternoon, the towering dunes of Erg Zahar appear on the horizon. Camp is set at the foot of the dunes, surrounded by smaller rolling sands.

The trek crosses back into the Draa Valley, where the valley cuts deep into the desert landscape. Here, dunes meet vibrant valley colors and scattered vegetation.

Later, walk toward a rocky hill surrounded by tamarisk trees and dunes. From this elevated position, enjoy panoramic views across the valley and desert.

Overnight camp in this scenic location.

On the final morning, trek toward the Lbour region, characterized by flatter terrain and increased vegetation with mountain views in the distance.

From here, return to Taragalte Nomad Camp in M’Hamid El Ghizlane, where a shower, dinner, and a final evening around the fire await.
