5‑Day Sahara Desert Trek to Erg Zahar & Draa Valley from M’Hamid

After breakfast at Taragalte Nomad Camp in M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the camel caravan is loaded and the trek begins toward the Sidi Naji region.

Along the route, pass the ruins of Oulad Zbiir, where fragments of pottery reveal traces of ancient desert civilizations. After approximately three hours of trekking through wild desert terrain, lunch is served beneath tamarisk trees.

In the afternoon, continue for another hour and a half before camping among dunes in an open area with panoramic desert views.

Overnight in nomadic tents.

Today’s destination is the spectacular Erg Zahar dune region. The trek crosses endless, flat desert plains that gradually transform into dramatic sand formations.

Reach the site known as the “Eye of the Hunted Gazelle,” where ruins of a nomadic market and a fallen ksar can be explored. Ancient irrigation channels remain visible in the sand — evidence of past desert agriculture.

In the evening, arrive at the towering dunes of Erg Zahar and set camp at their base.

Depart Erg Zahar and cross back into the Draa Valley, where sand dunes meet the valley’s vibrant vegetation.

Later, reach a rocky hill surrounded by tamarisk trees and dunes. From this elevated point, enjoy sweeping panoramic views before spending the night under the stars.

Today’s route leads toward the Berthum dunes, offering expansive views of the Bani Mountains on the horizon.

The landscape becomes varied once again, combining dunes, open plains, and subtle vegetation. Camp is set in this scenic desert environment.

On the final day, trek toward the Lbour region — an open area with vast plains and typical Sahara vegetation.

Along the route, reach a waterhole in the Oum Azum Valley where both trekkers and dromedaries can refresh.

Continue the return journey to Taragalte Nomad Camp in M’Hamid El Ghizlane.
